In this stage of the illustration, we were asked to bring the finalized layout into blocks of value, and then translate those values into colors in order to get organized and ready for the final 20″x24″ painting. During the in-class critique for the previous layouts, it was suggested to me that I should include both the sheet-ghost character and the animal character in some way. My solution was to have the fox running from the ghost, carrying a trick-or-treat pumpkin, suggesting that it had been stolen. I didn’t expect the reaction from the other students (variations of “aw” and “that’s cute”) but given that those are the key phrases I look to elicit from any audience I felt this was going to be successful at least in that regard. Painting the whole thing on a big canvas in oil will be a whole different animal from doing it digitally, though!
